Obituary for Jeffrey Guy Johnston
Jeffrey Guy Johnston passed away December 14, 2019 due to complications from septic shock. He was surrounded by his wife, his brother and many of his wonderful friends. He was born January 19, 1948 in Santa Monica, California to Phillip and Margaret Johnston. He has an older brother James (Rocky) Edge in Parowan, UT. and a sister Katherine Johnston in Bozeman, MT. His younger brother Kelley Johnston in Melbourne, Australia passed away earlier this year. He has several nephews and nieces also.
Jeff grew up in Torrance, California and learned to surf at an early age when his brother Rocky bought him his first surfboard. Rocky also taught him how to sail when he was younger. He met his wife Pam in 1969 at a club called The Flying Jib in Redondo Beach, now where Dive-N-Surf is located. After spending the 69/70 ski season working in Aspen, Co. they married in January 1971. Jeff and Pam were inseparable in all of their life's endeavors. They are soul mates to the core.
Jeff bought a Pacific Catamaran in 1975 and they began racing with the fleet along the coast (and sometimes Lake Havasu) and retained the friendships developed there. He also had motorcycles and they went dirt bike riding almost every weekend in the desert while living in California.
After being a VW mechanic in Redondo Beach, Jeff got his real estate license and started investing in property but in 1980 Jeff and Pam moved to Brian Head, UT. and helped manage the Chalet Village complex. He met many of his close friends in Utah but kept many of his old friends from California. They moved to Parowan in 1986 and proceeded to build, from the ground up, Brian Head radio station 98.1FM which was called Classy 98 and is now known as Star 98. They put 98.1 on the air in November 1988 and ran it for 11 years. They sold the station in 1999 and built Oak Storage in Parowan in 2001. They kept Oak Storage for 11 years and sold it in 2013.
Every summer, Jeff would spend his days fishing, sailing and kayaking at the log lake house they have in Minnesota where he developed wonderful friendships with the neighbors along the lake. He loved his 2006 Unlimited Jeep and would make yearly treks to Moab with friends he met throughout the years, and he was out almost daily in the deserts around southern Utah. His sharp sense of humor, intelligence, and fun will be sorely missed.
