Obituary for Merril Lee Werch

Merril Lee Werch, born to Charles and Oleta Werch on April 29, 1941 in Berlin, Wisconsin passed away in the early hours on November, 30, 2021, at home after a long illness. His wife and daughter Heather were present.

He is survived by his wife Theresa Werch, daughter Crystal Slater, her husband Mark, granddaughter Althea and her husband Derrick, great grandson Carver and granddaughter Cassidy, daughter Heather Blum and her husband Guy, grandson Justin, and sister Wendie Scheuermann. We all miss him terribly.

Merril loved God, his family, flying his own plane, trail riding, target shooting, motorcycling, and driving anywhere in the car.

He worked jobs traveling the country including the Wisconsin Conservation Department, National Park Service as a volunteer firefighter in Yosemite and the Grand Tetons. He finally settled down in 1965 as a security specialist at Lockheed Aircraft for 35 years.

Merril was generous and had a big heart, and a great sense of humor. He was modest about his own contributions and complimentary of others. He took care of his ailing dad in his final days.

He piloted his plane from California to Wisconsin without a radio. He traveled all over the country restoring phone poles for a communications company, building crews and leading them at every stop. He moonlighted doing security for Universal Studios where he got to know a lot of stars. He and Jimmy Stewart chatted over lunch. Brian Keith gave him an autographed photo for a boy he knew.

He was a God fearing man, and he said he was "ready."

He'll want us to remember him as big and huggable, a good father, a good husband, and always with a wild story to tell.
