Obituary for Mona Jean Harvey Sonntag

Mona Sonntag – beloved daughter, sister, mother, relative and friend – passed away on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at her home in Cedar City, UT, with her grandson Doug by her side, after suffering a hip breakage 1 ½ months earlier and several years of dementia.
She was given the name Mana Jean Harvey when she was born in Flint, Michigan on January 7, 1926 to Coridon and Effie Harvey, but later she changed it to Mona – she was the youngest of five children, and there was a span of 20 years between her oldest sibling Mildred and her. Mona thought highly of her mother Effie, because of her generosity toward others, and she loved her brother Kenneth very dearly. She loved cats when she was young. Mona Jean & her niece Mona Rae loved dancing so much that they were dubbed the Jitterbug Queens. She married Harry Sonntag, a World War II veteran, on August 11, 1945 in Saginaw, Michigan – and they were married for 61 years! She lived in Flint, Clare and Mount Pleasant, Michigan; Santa Clarita, Glendale and San Dimas, California; & Cedar City and St. George, Utah. Mona Jean was a hard worker – her co-workers at Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company (now Pacific Life) loved her dearly. When she, her husband, her daughter & her grandson moved to Cedar City, Utah in December 1986, she was very thankful for the loving welcome that the Cedar 9th Ward provided to her family, and they have a special place in her heart. She joined her husband, daughter & grandson in being baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1987, and another of her favorite memories is serving in the church kitchen. Later in her life, she loved it when her grandson Doug took her to the older singles events, including dances.
Preceding her in death are all of her siblings, her husband, Harry Sonntag, and her only child, Cheryl Pooser. She is survived by her only grandchild, Douglas Pooser Sonntag and dog, Kiva. She will be missed by the many relatives and friends whom she is leaving behind.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Cedar City 9th Ward building, 256 S. 900 West. Viewing will be on Monday, June 14, 2021 from 9:00 until 10:30 AM in the Relief Society room. Interment will be at the Cedar City Cemetery, under the direction of Affordable Funeral Services, 2002 North Main Street, Cedar City, Utah (435-586-3456).
Thanks and appreciation to Iron County Home Health, Zions Way Home Health and Hospice, Caring Companion Services and others who helped make Mona Jean comfortable the last years of her life.
