Obituary for Robert Ellis Jeffcott

Dr. Robert Ellis Jeffcott was born on September 14, 1929 and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 1, 2019. When he was an infant, his family moved from his birthplace of Worchester, Massachusetts to Miami Beach, Florida. Robert had a difficult childhood. His father was known as a respected outdoorsman in the Everglades but died of complications of alcoholism when his only son was thirteen. Robert was raised by a God-fearing mother, and he was a great help to her after his father died.

Robert trusted Christ as his Savior during his early teen years. He worked various jobs as a teenager in order to help support his mother, who had serious health issues. He sensed God’s call to the ministry and enrolled in Bob Jones University in 1947 to train for the pastorate. While there he met and later became engaged to Dorothy Finley. They were married on June 26th, 1952, in Miami, Florida.

In 1953, Robert and Dorothy took what was to be a brief trip to California to visit his wife’s sisters. They ended up staying in California until 1987. During those years Robert pastored two churches and later became the General Director of an independent faith mission board, Biblical Ministries Worldwide, near Atlanta, Georgia. He held this position for almost 30 years.

In 1978, an honorary Doctorate of Humanities was conferred upon Robert by Bob Jones University for his notable accomplishments in world missions.

Robert selected this Bible verse for the gravestone - “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21) Those who witnessed his life would be reminded of another Bible passage, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:57-58)

Robert’s beloved wife Dorothy graduated to Heaven in 2011. He is survived by three sons: Thomas (Pamela), Clinton (Pamela), and Philip, twelve grandchildren, and currently 32 great-grandchildren.
